They Might Be Giants is inspired by an invitation to participate in an group exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum regarding the 2020 US election. My research led me to visit the National Archives in Washington DC where the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights are housed. Walking up the grand staircase on Constitution Ave., I fixated on the buildings enormous bronze doors – 38 feet high and over 6 tons. A photograph of the doors from 1936 that shows the relationship in scale between the guard and the door is the subject of my recent work They Might Be Giants. The title is a reference to Cervantes' Don Quixote; the 'Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha' who believes that the windmills he sees in the distance are 'hulking giants' and mistakes their blades for 'long arms'.
