Fuera de lugar (Out of place) is the mark a chair leaves on the carpet. Marcel Duchamp grouped a set of observations he had noted in a notebook under the term Infra-mince (infra-thin) to describe barely perceptible, subtle, and ephemeral phenomena, such as the residual warmth of a seat. He explored the term as an artistic category that captures the almost-nothing, what lies between two states, and which cannot be measured or weighed but can be felt. The presence of the absent in the remnants of absence.
Out of place are the works of art evacuated from museums in wartime. Cultural heritage is often a target of attacks aimed at erasing the cultural identity of the adversary, and evacuation has become a widespread strategy to preserve history and art in the face of conflict, with Spain being the precursor that demonstrated its effectiveness by evacuating the collections of museums such as the Prado during the coup d'état and the outbreak of the Civil War.
Out of Place is the title of Edward Said's last book, a recapitulation of the themes that have occupied the life of one of the most important intellectuals of this century: forced displacement, dispossession, and inner exile.
Out of place is the position the artist occupies to observe from the margins.
